Adaptive Designs / Assistive Equipment

Welcome, HOME is filled with accessible design ideas. Some ideas are more elaborate than others. We are most satisfied when we find a simple solution to an accessibility challenge.

We'd like to hear about the solutions you have come up with. Photos are encouraged!

The following are just a few of our ideas:

threshold underlayment

To avoid a rise between the finished floor and the exterior door threshold the incline was eliminated before the carpet was laid.

Porch threshold fix

Two examples of "mini-ramps" leading from the guest bedrooms to the screened porch. Both are constructed from cedar (one a single piece, the other is several strips). Both are glued and then screwed down to the porch floor to ensure sturdiness.

bathroom wall reinforcement

Because Welcome, HOME was newly constructed, we reinforced all the bathroom walls with sheets of 5/8 inch 5-play plywood anywhere a grab bar may be located, such as around bath tubs, toilets and sinks.

This reinforcement provides extra support for grap bars, towel bars and toilet paper holder - anything that protrudes from the wall. It also allows for grab bars to easily be relocated in the future, if necessary.
